Workplace Wellness I

May 9 marked the beginning of GKH’s 12-week Wellness Program, 2016 edition. The program, which is offered regularly, includes an activity component designed to get participants moving, and a weight-loss component for those who need a little extra incentive to drop some pounds.

For the activity program, participants commit to a goal of 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes of activity a day at least five times a week. Daily minutes are tracked over the 12-week period, and participants who meet the required weekly minutes for 11 of the 12 weeks receive cash based on the activity level achieved.

For the weight loss program, participants record the percentage of weight lost (or gained) each week. The goal is a slow but steady loss of an average 1.5 lbs. per week, which is considered safe, and is easier to maintain in the long term. At the end of the program, participants receive cash based on the percentage of weight lost, up to 10%.

In addition to the individual incentives and other prizes throughout the 12 weeks, there are prizes for “Most Exercised” (highest average/week) and “Biggest Loser” (greatest % lost not to exceed 10%) to add a little friendly competition. Incentives along the way keep enthusiasm high.

Several other activities focused on wellness are also part of the program. Chad Hake from Crossfit Trinium comes periodically during the lunch hour to lead participants in stretching activities. Attorney Sheila O’Rourke also leads lunch hour stretching and yoga sessions. Partner Dwight Yoder agreed to demonstrate the proper way to do push-ups and crunches, including the right music, the right apparel, and the right equipment. Elder Law paralegal Ryan Burroughs, an avid mountain biker, gave a lunch hour class on bike maintenance.

At just past the halfway point, most of the 23 initial participants are still going strong. Bonni Boulton, GKH office assistant, has nothing but raves: “It has been exceedingly valuable in motivating me to get moving every day. I’m now on the treadmill every morning, which is totally due to the wellness program. I just hope it continues once the program ends!”
