GKH Partners with Nonprofits to Present Seminar on Child-on-Child Abuse
Gibbel Kraybill & Hess LLP will present “Child-on-Child Abuse: Recognizing, Reporting, Preventing” on Thursday, October 5, 8 to 11:40 a.m. at the Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster. GKH is collaborating with Samaritan Safe Church/Safe Places and The Center for Children’s Justice to address what is rapidly becoming an urgent issue for families, communities, churches and youth-serving organizations.
“Child-on-child abuse is a growing concern in Pennsylvania and across the nation. Research indicates around 40% of the children who are sexually abused are violated by children under age 18,” noted Linda Crockett, Director of Samaritan Safe Church/Safe Places.
Seminar participants can expect to learn how to:
- Recognize and effectively respond to and intervene with the child who has been assaulted by another juvenile, or address children with sexual behavior problems;
- Identify risk and protective factors within families and organizational settings, in order to more fully safeguard children;
- Navigate Pennsylvania laws related to reporting and responding to suspected child abuse; and
- Enforce Title IX, which applies to all institutions, both public and private, that receive federal funding.
The conference includes the following breakout sessions:
- Linda Crockett, Director of Safe Church/ Safe Places at Samaritan Counseling Center will offer a two-part workshop, Children & Teens with Sexual Behavior Problems, to assist parents, professionals, caregivers and others to recognize, respond to, and intervene appropriately in instances of problematic sexual behavior; identify risk and protective factors; and develop organizational and family safety plans.
- Cathy Palm, Director of the Center for Children’s Justice, will offer sessions on Child-on-Child Incidents and the Mandated Reporter to those who are required by law to navigate the Pennsylvania reporting requirements in this challenging and complex area.
- GKH attorneys Dwight Yoder, Jeff Worley and Ann Martin will address Title IX and Duties of Care in the Wake of Suspected Abuse. Title IX applies to all institutions, both public and private, that receive federal funding, including through federal financial aid programs and lunch programs used by students.
